Sculptures

Through a lot of hard work by Mason City’s non-profit organization, River City Sculptures on Parade, four new sculptures by Robin Anderson now call the Mason City Arena home.

Going for the Goal Going for the Goal was gifted by Julie Meindl, Mike Reindl, Sr., Matthew Reindl, and Martin Meindl in memory of Mikey Reindl. Mikey began playing hockey at the age of 3 and continued through his senior year of high school.

Let’s Go Dad This sculpture was donated by Dr. J.D. and Jill Thoreson. They raised four children who participated in ice sports in North Iowa, and have a long history of supporting ice sports here. They can even remember when the Mohawk Hockey Team played its games at an outdoor rink!

Polished Performance – Priscilla Songer Ray grew up in Mason City, and her Dad had her on skates at an early age on frozen rivers and streams. Beginning in the late 1940s until the early 1960s she perfected her technique at the East Park skating rink—which was actually the frozen over ball diamond. But they had a warming house, so it was an upgrade from the river! Jack Martin, an accomplished figure skater from the area, helped Priscilla to hone her skills to the point she became a skater in the Ice Follies. She was performing with the Follies in San Francisco when she met a dashing young Navy officer, who later became her husband of more than 50 years. THANKS to both Admiral and Priscilla Ray for providing this sculpture for our community. It is a fitting tribute to their love story.

Crack the Whip – The benefactor of Dee Clements sculpture Crack the Whip prefers to remain anonymous, but we are extremely thankful for their gift to this project. This sculpture is in recognition of all the young people who have participated in ice sports through the years. Skating—whether it be figure skating or hockey, requires balance, determination, and perseverance. These are all good lessons that serve us well as children and adults. What’s more—skating is FUN! And this sculpture is dedicated to the fun-loving child in each of us!

The Mason City Arena Sculptures are part of the River City Sculptures on Parade.
